The discovery of little known artists from around the world and
from unfamiliar cultures, has been a great source of excitement
and joy. Because we believed that knowing something about the artists
and the world in which they live makes ownership all that more meaningful,
we will occasionally update you on our travels and the people we've
met in our search for religious and sacred art.
The
first trip to Eastern Europe brought together beautiful icons
from Bulgaria, exquisite examples of traditional folk art from
Romania and whimsical wood carvings from the foremost marionette
maker in the Czech Republic. It was a pleasure to see a rebirth
of the traditional arts in these countries that have undergone
such political and social upheaval.
Recently,
Four Winds Traders went to Greece and Turkey. With stunning mosques
and the startling call to prayer as a background, we looked for
pieces that carried with them the symbols and decorations of the
Islamic faith. We bought extraordinary examples of porcelain-some
in the Iznik tradition and others using typical Byzantine designs.
From a tiny studio tucked behind a bustling bazaar we bought calligraphy
from a young woman carrying on the tradition of her illustrious
father. From the Istanbul School of Traditional Arts, we found
work from talented new artists combining calligraphy and patterns.
In
Greece, always known for its beautiful jewelry, we found crosses
designed in the traditional patterns of the islands - each adding
some nuance only that island has to offer. A trip to Corfu introduced
Four Winds to a restorer whose soulful icons connect us to ancient
and mysterious worlds.
Plans
for an early spring visit to the Far East are already under way.
As always, we look forward to seeing what the next trip brings
and sharing, through art, the true abundance of these travels.
In the moment it takes to admire something of beauty - we have
apprehended the best qualities of a culture and all differences
and alien ways of living fall away leaving behind pleasure and
joy. We hope you enjoy our collection and will be inspired to
come back again.
